Piatek – The Geometric Centre of Poland

This village is famous and proud of the fact that it finds itself in the “middle” of Poland.

Piatek is a village in Lodzkie Province in Leczycki county. It lies on the intersection of the two roads from Lodz to Kutno and from Lowicz to Leczyca. Other lines intersect here also – from the furthest points north to south in Poland and east to west (respectively Cape Rozewie, near Jastrebia Gora and Mount Opolonek, a peak in the Bieszczady Mountains; the bend in the River Bug near Zosina and a bend in the River Odra close to Cedynia). By this method the geometric centre of Poland was discovered to be Piatek. This is obviously arrived at by convention and there is no official designation.

This important fact about the town has been highlighted by the residents and the local authorities. So that no one has any doubt, at the entrance to the village of Piatek is a sign, similar to one at a border crossing, with the inscription “Piatek – The Geometric Centre of Poland”.

In the centre of the town there is also a monument symbolising the geometric centre of Poland. Earlier a huge stone lay at this location. For such a small town it is a reason for pride and also a valuable tourist attraction which interests motorists and encourages them to stop.
