Lighthouse in Stilo

This lighthouse was constructed from steel plates in the early 20th century.

This is one of the youngest lighthouses on the Polish coast located near the town of Sasino next to the small estate of Stilo. It was built between 1904 and 1906 and therefore has a relatively simple history. It was built 1km from the coast but takes advantage of a sand dune which is 45m high. The tower is 33.4m high and painted with horizontal bands of red, white and black. The light is positioned 75m above sea level and has a range of 23. 5 nautical miles. The lighthouse has an unusual construction – assembled from steel plates held together with screws. The gaps between the individual panels are sealed with lead. Two white observation galleries are the culmination of the tapered 16-sided tower. Inside, the walls are lined with thick cork and painted white. There are probably at least 200 lighthouses of this type in the world. The lighthouse survived the last war in good condition and was re-commissioned in April 1946. In 1975 a new lighting arrangement was installed – a rotating triple array, with six bulbs and two spares on each array.
